– a retrospective on the creation of the East Anglia Group facility

In January 2018 the East Anglia Gauge 1 group used Anglia Roads – our portable exhibition layout – at premises at Hepworth. These premises were rented on an informal basis, and in April 2018 we were given until the end of May to vacate, as the site had been sold. A temporary location was found, offering members the opportunity to run twice a month, but this was not a long term solution, so the search for new premises began.

We were very fortunate to find a disused pig barn and a farmer who was amenable to letting us carry out major refurbishment and modification to the unit to make it suitable for our needs. Our initial intention was to use the main part of the barn only – a space about 57 feet by 28 feet – and to instal Anglia Roads. The layout would be installed as a semi-permanent running track for members, but would be dismantled and taken to exhibitions too, as previously.

Then we had two more strokes of good fortune. One of our members very kindly donated his track to the club for installation as a permanent layout in our new premises, and we had the opportunity to take a 35 ft by 15 ft space adjoining our ‘track hall’ which would make an ideal club room, with general meeting space, refreshment facilities and a library. So the stage was set; a five year agreement was reached, commencing 1st July 2018, and work could begin!
